Here are the most important tools that you will need:

A Hammer – The standard hammer is called the cross-peen hammer. You’ll use this for knocking in nails, for example to hang pictures or put up shelving units. You can also use it for chiselling. If you are going to be using thin nails, it’s better to get a lighter hammer with a not so heavy head.

Paintbrushes – You’ll need these for decorating. Cheap paintbrushes will not get you the finish you need. Invest once in good brushes and look after them by cleaning them properly after use. They will last a long time.

Screwdrivers – Screwdrivers come in all shapes and sizes (usually small, medium and large) and usually have flat or cross-headed drivers. On most occasions, these are the only screwdrivers you’ll need for household use. You can also invest in an electric screwdriver, which will reduce the amount of manual labour you’ll need to do and will ensure that nails are screwed in properly.

Pliers – Will allow you to pull out nails.
